North Jersey Women's Club

Serving the communities of Bloomingdale, Butler and Kinnelon since 1976!

Together we can make a difference!

Within ourselves, within our homes, and within our communities.

The North Jersey Women's Club was founded in 1976 and became a member of the New Jersey State Federation of Women's Clubs and the General Federation of Women's Clubs in 1977. Its goals are to better the lives of others and enrich the lives of its members.

Our members are of all ages. They reside in Bloomingdale, Butler, Kinnelon, Riverdale, Vernon and West Milford, as well as California and Virginia. The Club does not have a residency requirement. Membership is open to all women who wish to improve their communities and help others.

We meet on the second Tuesday of each month, September through June, at 7:30 PM at the Kinnelon library on the second floor.

During the past few years, the Club has donated their time and monies to the following organizations:

  • Rape Crisis Kits for Chilton Hospital
  • Salvation Army Dress a Bear for Needy Children
  • Operation Cookie/Candy

  • Thanksgiving Food Baskets
  • Christmas Presents for Special Families
  • Bingo Parties at Diamond Spring Lodge for the Blind
  • Pencils for Bosnia
  • "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" Walks
  • Battered Women's Shelters
  • The GFWC's "Libraries 2000 and Beyond" Program
  • TLC Ministries
  • Christmas Tree decorating at Chilton Hospital
  • Making Books for Blind Children

Our Club makes annual donations to Tri-Boro First Aid Squad, the Animal Shelters, Libraries, and Fire Departments of Butler, Bloomingdale and Kinnelon, GCI (Girl's Career Institute) delegate sponsorship and GS Camperships to name a few. We aide our local towns in whatever way we can -- from planting flowers to beautify our communities to raising funds for the Children's wing at Bloomingdale's new Library.

The New Jersey State Federation of Women's Clubs...

was founded in 1894, has over 17,000 members in 351 clubs throughout the State. Its members are diverse in age and life experiences, but unified in their goal to make a difference in the lives of others. We list among our accomplishments:

  • Passage of the New Jersey Highlands Preservation Act by Govenor McGreevey on 10th August 2004
  • Founded Douglass College (a College for Women in New Brunswick, New Jersey) - built Science and Music Buildings - Large sums of money were donated for the Library, Student Center, Art Center, and Developmental Disabilities Center for Autistic Children.
  • Scholarships at Douglass for Art, Drama, Literature, Music, Federation, Citizenship, Political Science, Continuing Education, and Nutrition Management Science.
  • Established numerous community libraries
  • Preserved of the Palisades
  • Grants to Women's Shelters in 21 New Jersey Counties

The General Federation of Women's Clubs...

was founded in 1890, has over 250,000 members in the United tates and 8 million members worldwide. We list among our accomplishments:

  • Established 75% of the libraries in America
  • Established a National model for Juvenile Courts in 1899
  • Turned the tide for passage of the Pure Food and Drugs Act
  • Supported the first Child Labor Law and Eight-hour Work Day Legislation
  • Endorsed a resolution support of equal rights and responsibilities for women in 1944
  • Sponsored nationwide discussion on changing roles of women in "Which Way Forward for Women?" forums
  • At the President's Summit for America's Future, GFWC pledged its members to donate $12.5 million in books and materials to public libraries and public school libraries

Mr. Edward Shiobara of Fine Camera and Repair has made a most generous donation of twelve (12) new-in-box Yashica EZ Zoom 90 Data Back Cameras valued at approximately $100 each to the North Jersey Women's Club. His selfless generosity is overwhelming. All the ladies of the North Jersey Women's Club wish to thank him for such a wonderful donation.

September 12, 2004

Govenor McGreevey signed the New Jersey Highlands Preservation Act on August 10th, 2004. We are all very excited that the New Jersey State Federation of Women's Clubs, including our Chapter, was able to assist in the passing of this noteworthy legislation!

Our first meeting of the new year is in two days at Kinnelon Library. We have already completed our Cookie Dough Fundraiser and are selling tickets for the House Tour and Bus Trip. All our Members are eagerly awaiting the 2004-2005 year. We have a lot of work in store for us with many Fundraisers and Community Supportive Events.

Our New Board is in place. We have had our biennial (every two years) Installation Dinner and welcomed our newly elected Board. We are very excited about upcoming projects and fundraisers. And at our next meeting, on June 8th 2004, we will be deciding on our activities for the next two years. Please stay tuned for more updates!

October 30, 2003

Dolores Farrelly asked us to focus on the Convention in May 2004, and wanted to let us know that positions on the NJSFWC Board of Directors need to be filled everything needs to be filled - talk to JoAnna for more information if you're interested after November 1st (that's when she'll have more information).

On November 4th please go to the polls, there are some important issues that you should voice your opinion on - there are three statewide ballot questions that we are voting on (Preserving the Highlands, Community Park Development, etc.)

All Members of the NJSFWC are invited to attend a CCI graduation on Saturday, November 8th, 2003. Tentative plans include a tour and a luncheon at the new CCI training facility in Medford, MY. This will be followed by the graduation and turn-in of Ripley II (Anne Redlus' puppy) for advanced training. At the graduation, the NJSFWC will be recognized by CCI for all the work that has been done thus far for this Special State Project.

All Members of the NJSFWC are invited to celebrate Douglass College Day on Saturday, November 8th, 2003. Inspire the next Douglass generation! Bring a young woman to Douglass College Day. An open house event for you and a young woman you know who wants to learn more about Douglass College. You will be able to: Learn about applying to Douglass, Discover ways to finance and education, Tour the campus, Visit a residence hall, Learn about Douglass' wide array of majors and special academic programs, and Meet the Douglass deans and staff.
The registration area opens at Douglass College Center at 11am.

ENTERTAINMENT BOOKS are now on sale for $22.00 each. They include coupons and vouchers (which far exceed the price of the book) for local and national businesses and merchants and cover Bergen, Passaic, and Morris Counties. Our ANNUAL CENTERPIECE WORKSHOP will be, once again, held on November 18th & 19th at 6:30pm at the Glenwild Garden Center in Bloomingdale, NJ. Refreshments and a fun time will be the agenda for the evening. Holiday centerpieces will be made by each person. The cost is only $16.00 and EVERYTHING is included!!! Our Club has made it to the GFWC's Clubwoman Magazine, complete with an article and picture!

Letters are being written to Congressmen in order to preserve the Highlands Stewardship Act.

We are sponsoring a soccer team for the Tri-Boro Soccer League.

Distributions of 20 banks throughout Butler, Bloomingdale and Kinnelon businesses and vetinarians have been made to collect Dimes for Dogs, our Special State Project (Canine Companions for Independence).

Our group recently donated to Chilton Memorial Hospital four rape crises kits.

At our April meeting, the President of the Womens Club will be handing out monetary donations to local non-profit organizations thoughout the Tri-Boro area...totaling donations of over $1,500.00!!
